Πώς να κάνω το Ubuntu 12.04 να δει εξωτερικό σκληρό δίσκο χωρίς εξωτερικό τροφοδοτικό;

Καταρχάς νομίζω ότι η περιγραφή του προβλήματος είναι εντελώς λάθος
Αν δεν παίρνει ρεύμα ο δίσκος τότε κάτι έχει πάθει ο δίσκος. Σύνδεσε σε τον σε άλλο υπολογιστή για να δεις αν δουλεύει.

Εφόσον σιγουρευτείς ότι δεν τρέχει κάτι με το δίσκο δώσε στο τερματικό σαν root τα εξής:

lsusb
blkid

και πόσταρε εδώ το αποτέλεσμα.
O δίσκος είναι φορμαρισμένος σε ntfs ;

PS:Και εγώ έχω ένα εξατερικό btw με δύο καλώδια usb και δεν παίζει στο pc από το οποίο γράφω

Υπαρχει κι αλλη μια περιπτωση.Για καποιο λογο,το pc σου ισως δεν δινει αρκετο ρευμα απο την θυρα usb,ωστε να δουλεψει ο δισκος.Μπορεις να κανεις κατι απλο.Αγορασε ενα " Υ " usb καλωδιο,και συνεδεσε τον ετσι.Το συγκεκριμενο,εχει δυο 2 αρσενικα usb,ενα για συνδεση κι ενα για τροφοδοσια.Το συνδεεις σε δυο θυρες ταυτοχρονα,κι εχεις την ποσοτητα ρευματος που ειναι απαραιτητη για τον δισκο σου.Δοκιμασε το,δεν χανεις τιποτα.Μπορεις να το αγορασεις σε καθε καταστημα ηλεκτρονικων ειδων/ειδων pc.Το συνιστω εκ πειρας,καθοτι σε ενα παλιοτερο λαπτοπ που ειχα,αντιμετωπισα ακριβως αυτο το προβλημα και το ελυσα ετσι.

Να σημειώσω επίσης ότι ο δίσκος είναι
ολοκαίνουργιος και πρώτη φορά τον συνδέω
στον υπολογιστή ή σε οποιονδήποτε
υπολογιστή. Βεβαίως, έχω κάθε λόγο να πιστεύω
ότι ήρθε φορμαρισμένος σε FAT32 ή NTFS.
Επίσης, στο συγκεκριμένο υπολογιστή,
ακόμα κι όταν είχα Windows, ποτέ δε μπόρεσα
να φορτίσω το κινητό μου, ακόμη κι αν
έλεγε στα χαρακτηριστικά του ότι μπορεί
να φορτιστεί από υπολογιστή. Άρα, μάλλον κάποια ρύθμιση χρειάζεται που έχει να κάνει με το ρεύμα.

συνοδευοταν με τροφοδτικο ? έχει δηλαδη υποδοχή για βυσμα τροφοδοτικου?  αν οχι , τοτε συνδεσε τον και βρες  το  diks utility  ή το  gparted  για να δεις αν το βλεπει και διαμορφωσε τον  ..

Το έγραψα ήδη στο πρώτο μου μήνυμα σ'αυτό το νήμα ότι ανήκει στην κατηγορία των σκληρών δίσκων που ΔΕΝ συνοδεύονται από τροφοδοτικό, γιατί παίρνουν ρεύμα από τον υπολογιστή. Και ΟΧΙ, δεν τον βλέπει το gparted.

δοκίμασε  και σε αλλο υπολογιστη με αλλο ΛΣ.
πρωτα δοκιμασε να ειναι ξεχωριστή μονη της η usb θυρα.  Αν και νομιζω οτι ισως ειναι χαλασμενος ο δίσκος. κανενα λεντακι δεν δουλευει ?

Πολλές φορές τα laptop  για εξοικονόμιση ενέργειας δεν δίνουν αρκετή ισχύ στις θύρες USB (ή και firewire)ώστε να φορτίσουν κινητά να τροφοδοτήσουν σκληρούς δίσκους κ.α. συσκευές ώστε να αντέχει περισσότερο ή μπαταρία τους... 
Απ' όσο ξέρω δε μπορείς να το αλλάξεις απο software αυτό. 
 
Μια λυση είναι αγορασεις ενα καλώδιο όπως προτείνει ο aratron
Η αν έχεις ενα USB hub με δική του τροφοδοσία να το συνδέεις μέσω αυτού στο laptop σου.  
(Η 1η λύση αν δουλέψει έχει το πλεονέκτημα ότι θα μπορείς να δουλεύεις τον εξωτερικό δισκο χωρίς να χρειάζεσαι πρόσβαση σε ρευμα, η 2η απαιτεί και πρόσβαση σε ρεύμα.)
